Easy Crypto closed in NZ: what happened and what to do with your account

Easy Crypto stopped all New Zealand trading on 30 March 2026, a year after Swyftx bought it. Former customers still have three jobs: back up and empty the Easy Crypto Wallet app, download trading history for IRD, and choose where to buy next.

Easy Crypto NZ closed because Swyftx, the Australian exchange that bought it in 2025, moved its New Zealand customers onto the Swyftx platform and ended Easy Crypto trading on 30 March 2026. No collapse or missing funds have been reported. Coins already in your own wallet are still yours; you just need to manage them yourself.

For most of the past decade, Easy Crypto was the name Kiwis heard first when they asked how to buy Bitcoin. It took New Zealand dollars and sent coins straight to a wallet you controlled. That design is why its closure left so many loose ends: former customers still have coins, apps and records to deal with.

This page is a status report rather than a product review. If you only have five minutes, do these four things:

  • Write down your Easy Crypto Wallet recovery phrase and store it offline, before you touch the app.
  • Download your full trading history as CSV while the website still offers it.
  • Move coins out of the wallet app to Swyftx or a wallet you control, one asset at a time.
  • Ignore anyone asking for your phrase, whatever company name they use.

Easy Crypto NZ timeline, from launch to the last trade

Easy Crypto in New Zealand

  1. Easy Crypto launches in NZ

A local broker built around NZD deposits and delivery to the customer’s own wallet.

  2. NZDD stablecoin launched

Easy Crypto launched the NZ Digital Dollar (NZDD). Swyftx was later reported to be in talks to sell it.

  3. Swyftx acquisition announced

Terms were not disclosed. Easy Crypto had 350,000+ users and NZ$3.5bn+ in sales since 2018.

  4. Deal takes effect

The two platforms keep running separately while integration is planned.

  5. Role cuts

Reports of 11 roles cut across NZ, Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia as operations were streamlined.

  6. Migration emails go out

Customers are told trading will stop in about six weeks and are given a link to Swyftx.

  7. NZ trading ends

Swyftx NZ head Paul Quickenden confirms Easy Crypto ceased trading that day.

  8. Welcome-bonus deadline

Swyftx offered a NZ$20 Bitcoin bonus to migrating customers who verified before this date (terms applied).

Two dates often get mixed up. 31 March 2025 is when Swyftx took ownership. 30 March 2026 is when Easy Crypto stopped trading in New Zealand. For the twelve months in between, both brands operated side by side.

Why is Easy Crypto shutting down?

Easy Crypto shut its NZ trading because its new owner chose to run one platform, not because the business failed. That distinction matters in a country where crypto platforms have collapsed and taken customer money with them.

Swyftx, an Australian exchange, bought the business and chose to run New Zealand customers on its own platform rather than maintain two. Easy Crypto’s co-founder and chief executive, Janine Grainger, described the deal at the time as consistent with the company’s aim of widening access to digital assets. Swyftx says the switch gives former customers more coins, lower fees and extra services. The Easy Crypto brand, website and social media accounts stay with the Swyftx group.

No liquidation, missing funds or regulatory action has been reported. The practical change for customers is bigger than it looks, though, and it comes down to custody.

Easy Crypto vs Swyftx: who holds your coins now

The answer changed with the move. Easy Crypto worked as a broker. You paid in NZ dollars, and it sent the coins to a wallet address you gave it, often its own self-custody wallet app. The coins were yours to control from the moment they arrived.

Swyftx is a custodial exchange. When you buy there, your coins sit in an account that Swyftx controls on your behalf, much like money in a bank account, and you have to withdraw them to your own wallet if you want direct control.

Neither model is automatically better. Custodial accounts are easier to recover if you forget a password; self-custody removes the risk of the platform failing. What matters is knowing which one you are using. Our guide to custodial vs non-custodial wallets explains the trade-off with New Zealand examples.

What happened to my Easy Crypto account?

Your account was not moved for you; you had to link a Swyftx account yourself. From February 2026, customers received emails with a unique link to sign up for, or link, a Swyftx account. Swyftx’s Brisbane team also phoned customers who had not migrated by the cut-off, offering help with account setup and identity verification.

If you never acted on those emails, nothing was transferred into a Swyftx account in your name. Two points apply:

  • Your Easy Crypto login is no longer for trading. The website was kept online so customers can download their trading history, and older systems are being retired.
  • Coins already delivered to your own wallet are unaffected by the closure. They stay where they are, under your control, whether that is the Easy Crypto Wallet app, a hardware wallet or another app.

If you want to keep buying through the same group, setting up Swyftx is the route the company designed. Our Swyftx review for NZ users covers its fees, NZD deposits and spread. You are not obliged to use it, though, and the alternatives are listed further down.

Can I still use the Easy Crypto Wallet app?

You can still open it, but treat it as an exit route, not a long-term wallet. The Easy Crypto Wallet is a self-custodial app. As of 16 October 2026 it was still listed in the New Zealand App Store with a rating of 4.68 from 1,546 ratings, published under Dott Enterprises Limited. Services are being reduced, and Swyftx’s support guide is written to help you move funds out.

Swyftx’s guide is blunt on one point: don’t delete the app until your assets have moved. Deleting a self-custody wallet without a backup can lock you out of your coins permanently, because neither Swyftx nor anyone else holds a copy of your keys.

Find your Easy Crypto Wallet recovery phrase before migrating

A self-custody wallet is controlled by a secret, usually shown to you once as a list of 12 or 24 words called a recovery or seed phrase. The app on your phone is only a window onto coins recorded on the blockchain. Whoever has the phrase controls those coins, and anyone who loses it, along with the phone, loses them for good.

Before you migrate, uninstall or switch phones:

  1. Find your recovery phrase, or write it down again from the app’s backup settings if it lets you view it after re-authenticating.
  2. Store it offline: paper or metal, not a screenshot, cloud note or email to yourself.
  3. Never type it into a website or share it with anyone claiming to be from Easy Crypto, Swyftx or “support”. Neither company needs it to migrate you.

Our crypto security checklist goes further on storing phrases and avoiding phishing.

How to move coins out of the Easy Crypto Wallet

  1. Update the app

Install the latest Easy Crypto Wallet version from the App Store or Google Play.

  2. Choose where the coins go

Either a Swyftx account (linked through the migration email, the in-app notification or the Easy Crypto website, after identity checks) or a wallet you control. Our Bitcoin wallets guide compares options.

  3. Use the Portfolio Migrator or a manual transfer

Swyftx’s Portfolio Migrator sends each asset to your Swyftx deposit addresses and may take up to four hours. For a hardware wallet or other exchange, send each asset manually to an address you have copied and checked.

Kiwi tip: Keep the app open while the migrator runs. Transfers can pause or fail if it closes.

  4. Check unsupported coins

Swyftx lists some Ethereum-network tokens it doesn’t support. Send those to an external wallet, or they may become hard to reach.

  5. Confirm, then tidy up

Only once every balance shows at its new home should you consider removing the app. Keep the recovery phrase until you are certain the old wallet is empty.

Swyftx says it covers network fees for migrator transfers on Ethereum, Polygon, BSC and Base; manual transfers pay normal network fees. On the XRP Ledger, 0.2 XRP stays behind as a network requirement when you close an address.

Download your Easy Crypto trading history before IRD asks

People put this step off, and it is the one that can cost them most later.

IRD treats many crypto disposals as taxable, including selling for NZ dollars and swapping one coin for another. It asks you to keep records of each transaction, including the date, units and NZD value, and to keep them for at least seven years, even after you have sold everything. IRD also tells people to download exchange histories regularly because exchanges can close. Easy Crypto shows why.

What to save while the site still offers it:

  • The full transaction export, as CSV if available, covering every year you used the service.
  • Deposit and withdrawal records, including the wallet addresses coins were sent to.
  • A copy of bank statements showing payments to Easy Crypto, in case the export is ever incomplete.

The site’s future is not guaranteed. Swyftx has said it will stay online “for some time” for history downloads, without giving an end date. Our guide to crypto tax in NZ explains how IRD treats swaps, the FIFO and weighted-average methods, and the CARF reporting that began in April 2026.

Is Easy Crypto a New Zealand company?

Yes, in origin. It was founded in New Zealand in 2018 and published New Zealand registration details: NZBN 9429046530141 and Financial Service Providers Register number FSP691871. Both numbers are self-reported on Easy Crypto’s site; we could not confirm them on the FSPR search, so check the register yourself if it matters to you. Since March 2025 the business has been owned by Swyftx, which is Australian.

The brand also crossed borders. Easy Crypto Australia was folded into Swyftx in 2025. A Brazilian launch in 2021 never gained traction. Easy Crypto South Africa carries on independently under the Easy Crypto name, with its own website and operations, and was not part of the New Zealand migration. If a search result shows Easy Crypto still trading, check which country’s site you are looking at.

Easy Crypto, easyBitcoin and easybitcoin.nz are three different things

None of them is connected to the others. Searches for “easy crypto” and “easy bitcoin” blur together, and a few different things are involved:

  • Easy Crypto: the New Zealand broker covered on this page, closed to NZ trading.
  • easyBitcoin: a separate US-only app linked to the easyGroup brand. It is unrelated to Easy Crypto and isn’t available in New Zealand. Our easyBitcoin app explainer covers it.
  • easybitcoin.nz (this site): an independent information site with no connection to either company.

If an app, message or advert uses an “easy” name and asks you to log in, send coins or reveal a recovery phrase, treat it as a possible scam until you have checked the official domain.

Easy Crypto alternatives in NZ for former customers

No remaining service is an exact like-for-like replacement. Easy Crypto combined NZD bank funding with delivery to your own wallet, and most of what remains does one or the other.

Facts checked 16 Oct 2026 from each provider’s own pages where possible. Table order is not a ranking. Fees exclude spreads unless stated.

How each option differs from what Easy Crypto offered:

  • Swyftx is the default path and takes free NZD bank deposits, but it is custodial and its spread sits on top of the trading fee.
  • Stacked is the closest in spirit: a New Zealand, Bitcoin-only service that sends coins to a self-custody wallet, at a flat 1%. It is young and does nothing but Bitcoin. Read our Stacked Bitcoin app review.
  • Independent Reserve has a real BTC/NZD order book but no free local bank deposit; NZD arrives by card or SWIFT.
  • CEX.IO has operated since 2013 and its US entity holds FinCEN registration and state money-transmitter licences. For Kiwis, the catches are no NZD wallet (NZ cards are converted), no FSPR entry, no NZ dispute-resolution scheme and custodial accounts. Details are in our CEX.IO review.

Whichever you choose, the lesson from Easy Crypto still applies: keep coins you intend to hold in a wallet you control, and download your records every year.

Questions Kiwis ask

Why is Easy Crypto shutting down?

Because its owner moved customers elsewhere, not because it failed like Dasset or Cryptopia. Australian exchange Swyftx bought Easy Crypto in a deal effective 31 March 2025, then moved New Zealand customers onto the Swyftx platform. Easy Crypto stopped NZ trading on 30 March 2026. The brand, website and social accounts stay with the Swyftx group, and the site was kept online for a while so people could download their trading history.

Is Easy Crypto a NZ company?

Yes. It was founded in New Zealand in 2018 and published NZBN 9429046530141 and Financial Service Providers Register number FSP691871. We took both numbers from Easy Crypto’s own site and could not confirm them on the register itself. Since 2025 it has been owned by Swyftx, an Australian company. Easy Crypto South Africa is a separate business that still trades under the name.

What happened to my Easy Crypto account?

Customers were emailed from February 2026 with a link to set up or link a Swyftx account and complete identity checks. Easy Crypto delivered coins to wallets customers controlled, so it didn’t hold most balances in the first place. Anything in the Easy Crypto Wallet app is still under your control and has to be moved by you. Coins sent to a hardware wallet or another app are unaffected.

Can I still use the Easy Crypto Wallet app?

For now, but only as a way out. As of 16 October 2026 the app was still listed in the NZ App Store, while services are being reduced and Swyftx’s guide is written to help you move funds off it. Because it is self-custodial, nobody can recover your coins if you delete it without your recovery phrase. Back up first, then move.

Do I need my Easy Crypto history for tax?

Very likely, if you sold, swapped or spent crypto in a year when it was taxable. IRD expects records of each transaction in NZ dollars and says to keep them for at least seven years, even after you have sold everything. Download the full export from Easy Crypto while the site still offers it, because Swyftx has not given an end date for history downloads.

Is the easyBitcoin app the same as Easy Crypto?

No. easyBitcoin is a separate US-only app linked to the easyGroup brand, and it has nothing to do with Easy Crypto or this website. The similar names cause a lot of confusion in search results. Our easyBitcoin explainer covers who runs it and why Kiwis can’t use it.
