Crypto is risky
Bitcoin and other crypto-assets can rise or fall sharply in value, including to zero. You can lose some or all of the money you put in. In particular:
- prices can move a long way in minutes, and past performance tells you nothing reliable about the future;
- exchanges and apps can fail, be hacked, freeze withdrawals or close, and balances held on them are not covered by New Zealand’s Depositor Compensation Scheme;
- crypto sent to the wrong address or to a scammer usually can’t be recovered;
- if you hold your own keys and lose your recovery phrase, nobody can restore your coins;
- tax usually applies when you sell or swap, and the rules can change.
Only use money you can afford to lose, and read our crypto security checklist before you start.
Accuracy and dates
We work hard to keep pages accurate and show the date each source was published or checked. Fees, laws, licences and products change, sometimes without notice, and we can’t guarantee every page is current or complete. Always confirm details with the provider or the relevant agency before acting. If you spot an error, tell us via the contact page.
Live data
Some pages show live prices, charts, network fees and market indicators fetched from third-party services. That data is provided as is, may be delayed, incomplete or wrong, and may not match the price any platform will actually offer you. Widgets hide themselves if a service is unavailable. Don’t rely on them to make trading decisions.
Calculators and examples
Our calculators and worked examples use stated assumptions and hypothetical figures. They are illustrations, not quotes, and the result you get from a provider may differ.

We link to other websites, including exchanges, regulators and news outlets, for reference and convenience.
