easyBitcoin shutdown: what closes, when, and how to withdraw your Bitcoin

The app’s homepage gives 30 November 2026 as the sunset date. Below: the dates so far, the gaps in the notice, how long withdrawals can take, a step-by-step move to a wallet you control, and the NZ tax position for anyone resident here.

Yes, easyBitcoin is shutting down. Its website says the service will be sunset on 30 November 2026. Zero-balance accounts are already closed, and anyone with a balance is told to check their email. If you hold Bitcoin there, plan to withdraw it to a wallet you control well before that date, beginning with a small test send.

That leaves about six weeks from the date we checked, 16 October 2026. Six weeks is enough for a calm withdrawal, but not if an identity check fails or a bank transfer stalls near the end.

When is easyBitcoin shutting down?

On 30 November 2026, according to the homepage. Here is how the service got there.

easyBitcoin, from launch to sunset

  1. Launch in the United States

    easyGroup announces the app, provided by Uphold under a brand licence. The US App Store listing goes live the same day.

  2. UK version expected

    The launch announcement said a UK version was expected later in 2025. On 16 Oct 2026 we found no UK App Store listing.

  3. Last iPhone update we saw

    Version 1.2.4 is released in the US App Store.

  4. Sunset notice published

    The homepage says the service is being discontinued. Zero-balance accounts are closed; customers with a balance are told to check email.

  5. Service sunset

    The date the company gives for ending easyBitcoin.

What the easyBitcoin sunset notice says, and what it leaves out

The notice is short. It says the company has decided to discontinue the service and that the sunset date is 30 November 2026. It then splits customers into two groups: accounts with a zero balance have already been closed, and those with a balance should check their email for instructions.

Several things are missing from the homepage:

  • step-by-step withdrawal instructions;
  • a cut-off date for requesting withdrawals, if it differs from 30 November;
  • what happens to any balance still in an account after the closing date;
  • whether the app will keep working, read-only, after that date.

Any of those details will be in the emails sent to customers or on the help centre at support.easybitcoin.app. We haven’t seen the emails and won’t guess what they say. If you can’t find yours, ask official support for a copy.

That gap is also where scammers operate, offering their own “instructions” to people who can’t find the genuine ones.

How long easyBitcoin withdrawals can take before the deadline

The app’s marketing gave two settlement times for bank withdrawals: up to five business days for accounts linked through Plaid, and up to 65 days for accounts verified by micro-deposits. The notice doesn’t say whether closure withdrawals follow the same timings, so treat them as a guide only.

Working back from Monday 30 November 2026 shows why timing matters:

Withdrawal route Stated settlement time Latest start to land by 30 Nov
Bank, linked with Plaid Up to 5 business days Friday 20 November (US Thanksgiving on 26 November is a bank holiday)
Bank, verified by micro-deposits Up to 65 days 26 September, already passed by mid-October
Bitcoin to your own wallet Not published Depends on the app’s processing and the network; ask support if unsure

If your bank link was set up with micro-deposits, contact support now and ask how your withdrawal will be handled. The table is arithmetic on the advertised times, not a promise from the company.

Sell or withdraw your easyBitcoin balance? Three decisions first

  1. Keep or sell? To keep holding Bitcoin, withdraw the coins to a wallet without selling. To end up with dollars, sell and withdraw to your bank. We can’t tell you which suits you.
  2. Where will the coins go? A self-custody wallet means you hold the keys and no company can freeze them. Another custodial exchange means a new company holds them for you. Our guide to custodial vs non-custodial storage sets out the trade-off.
  3. When? Sooner than feels necessary. Identity re-checks, support queues and transfers all take time, as the table above shows.

How to withdraw Bitcoin from easyBitcoin to your own wallet

These steps work for leaving any custodial app. They don’t describe easyBitcoin’s own screens, which we haven’t used, so follow the in-app prompts for the withdrawal itself.

  1. Read the official instructions

    Open the app or type easybitcoin.app yourself, and read the emailed instructions. Don’t follow links in unexpected messages.

  2. Set up a self-custody wallet

    Install a reputable Bitcoin wallet from the official store, write the recovery phrase on paper, and keep it offline.

  3. Get and check a receive address

    Copy a fresh receive address from your wallet and check the first and last several characters after pasting it.

  4. Send a small test amount

    Withdraw a small amount first and wait until it shows as received in your wallet.

  5. Send the rest

    Withdraw the balance, noting any network or withdrawal fee shown before you confirm.

  6. Download your records

    Save statements and transaction history before the account closes, and keep them for at least seven years.

A few habits make the transfer smooth.

Check the address properly. Clipboard-hijacking malware can swap a pasted address for an attacker’s. After pasting, compare the first six and last six characters with your wallet. On a hardware wallet, confirm the address on the device’s own screen.

Do the test send. It costs a little extra in fees and is the cheapest insurance in Bitcoin. Wait until the small amount appears in your wallet before sending the rest.

Expect a network fee. Bitcoin transactions pay a fee to the network that rises and falls with demand; mempool.space shows current levels. The app may add a withdrawal fee. We couldn’t find one published, so check the figure on screen before confirming.

Guard the recovery phrase. The 12 or 24 words your new wallet shows you are the coins. Write them on paper, store them privately, and never type them into a website, chat or “support” form. Our comparison of Bitcoin wallets for Kiwis covers reputable options and backups.

Withdrawing US dollars and the easyBitcoin interest account

The app also advertised a US dollar balance earning variable interest through Atomic Brokerage LLC, with FDIC pass-through cover via a bank sweep network. If you hold dollars there, the routine is the same: find the emailed instructions, withdraw to the US bank account linked to your profile, and leave time for settlement.

FDIC pass-through cover relates to swept US dollars at participating banks, not to Bitcoin. It doesn’t change the task. Withdraw before the closing date and keep confirmation of every transfer.

Download your easyBitcoin records before the account closes

Transaction history can vanish with an app. Before the end of November, save:

  • account statements and any year-end summaries;
  • a full transaction history (purchases, sales, rewards, interest and withdrawals), ideally as a spreadsheet;
  • the transaction ID and destination address of every Bitcoin withdrawal;
  • copies of the shutdown emails and any support conversations.

Keep copies somewhere that doesn’t depend on the app or on a single email account.

NZ tax if you sell or withdraw your easyBitcoin balance

Most customers were in the United States. If you’re a New Zealand tax resident who held a balance, perhaps after living in the US and moving home, NZ tax rules can still reach your worldwide crypto activity.

In general terms, IRD treats crypto bought for the purpose of selling or exchanging as taxable when you dispose of it. Selling for US dollars is a disposal. Moving coins to your own wallet is not.

Rewards and bonuses paid in Bitcoin are usually income when received, at market value, and interest on a cash balance is generally income too. Amounts need converting to NZ dollars, and IRD expects records to be kept for at least seven years.

This is general information, not tax advice. Our guide to crypto tax in New Zealand goes deeper, and a tax adviser can help where more than one country is involved.

easyBitcoin shutdown scams to ignore

Every closure draws fake deadline emails, “support” accounts on social media, migration apps that ask for a recovery phrase, and paid “recovery services”. Genuine instructions never ask for your password, a 2FA code or a recovery phrase. Our page on easyBitcoin login safety and phishing lists the real domains and the tells of each fake.

How the easyBitcoin closure compares with Easy Crypto’s

Kiwis have watched a closure recently, though with a different company and outcome. Easy Crypto, the NZ broker unrelated to easyGroup, stopped trading for NZ customers on 30 March 2026 after Swyftx bought it, and customers were moved across to Swyftx.

Both show that a custodial service can close, merge or change its terms with only weeks of notice, while coins in a wallet you control are untouched by a company’s decisions. Our account of the Easy Crypto closure has the detail. New Zealanders looking for somewhere to buy can compare the Bitcoin apps that accept Kiwis.

Questions Kiwis ask

When is easyBitcoin shutting down?

The easybitcoin.app homepage gives 30 November 2026 as the date the service will be sunset. By 16 October 2026, accounts with a zero balance had already been closed, and customers holding a balance were told to check their email for instructions. The homepage doesn’t give a separate deadline for requesting withdrawals.

What happens to my Bitcoin if I do nothing?

The homepage notice doesn’t say. Look for the email the company sent you, or ask the help centre at support.easybitcoin.app, about balances left after the closing date. Waiting to find out is risky: starting early leaves time to fix failed identity checks, support delays or slow bank transfers before 30 November 2026.

Should I sell or withdraw my Bitcoin?

That depends on whether you want to keep holding Bitcoin, and we can’t advise you personally. Withdrawing to a wallet you control keeps the coins without a sale. Selling to US dollars ends your exposure but may count as a taxable disposal. Whichever you pick, give yourself several weeks before 30 November 2026.

Do I pay tax in New Zealand if I sell my easyBitcoin balance?

If you’re an NZ tax resident, IRD generally treats crypto bought for the purpose of selling as taxable when you dispose of it, wherever the platform is based. Selling for US dollars is a disposal; moving coins to your own wallet isn’t. Bonus or reward Bitcoin is usually income when received. Get advice for your own situation.

How long do easyBitcoin withdrawals take?

The app’s marketing described bank withdrawals settling in up to five business days where the account was linked with Plaid, and up to 65 days where it was verified by micro-deposits. Bitcoin sent to an outside wallet depends on the app’s processing plus the network. The closure notice doesn’t say whether these timings change, so start early.
